Introduction of College of Chemistry
The College of Chemistry was founded in April 1995 on the basis of Department of Chemistry, Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry, Institute of Polymer Science, National Engineering Research Center of Pesticide (Tianjin), Institute of New Energy Storage Material and Analytic Center of Nankai.
The Department of Chemistry was founded by professor Zongyue Qiu and professor Shixian Yang in 1921. It is one of the earliest chemistry departments in China. Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry was founded in 1962. The Institute of Polymer Science, the Institute of applied Chemistry, the Institute of New Energy Storage Material and the Analytic Center of Nankai were founded in the 1980s and 1990s.
So far, the College of Chemistry has two departments (Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical Biology), four institutes (Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry, Institute of Polymer Chemistry, Institute of New Energy Materials Chemistry and Institute of Applied Chemistry), as well as two research centers ( Center of Analytical Science and Center of Computational Molecular Science).
Currently, the College of Chemistry has 340 faculty members. There are 100 professors and 73 associate professors, including five academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, nine endorsed professors by Yangtze River Scholar Award program, seventeen winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one leading talent of National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program, two outstanding young scholars of National High-level Personnel of Special Support Program, two Young Scholars of Yangtze River Scholar Award program, nine winners of National Science Fund for Excellent Youth Scholars, two Innovative Research Group of National Science Foundation and two Yangtze River Innovative Teams of Ministry of Education. At present, the College of Chemistry has 1142 undergraduates, 615 master-level graduate students and 396 PhD-level graduate students.
The College of Chemistry has now gained two doctoral authorization points for first grade disciplines, namely Chemistry and Plant Protection, both of which are national key disciplines. Scientific research and teaching platform, including Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin), State Key Laboratory of Elemento-Organic Chemistry, State Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemical Biology, the National Engineering Research Center of Pesticide (Tianjin), the Key Laboratory of Functional Polymer Materials (Ministry of Education), the Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Materials Chemistry (Ministry of Education) and Engineering Research Center (Ministry of Education), the National Basic Scientific Research and Teaching Personnel Training Base (Chemical), and the base for Wisdom Absorption for Discipline Innovation in “111 Program”. At present, College of Chemistry of Nankai University has become leading national bases for research and education in chemistry.
